Weekly events: 30 July – 5 August
There are always lots of things to do around Brisbane/Queensland. Each week, I’ll feature some interesting things for you to check out. I’ll usually do this in the week prior to it though. Rather than by day, I’ll sort by category and then list chronologically.
7pm: Monkey Business. A special event hosted by Monkey Shoulder Scotch Whisky featuring live jazz and Monkey Shoulder cocktails. Canvas, Woolloongabba.
Markets this week include:
Wednesday: Jan Power’s Farmer Markets, weekly. Queen St mall, opp Casino.
Saturday: West End Markets, weekly. Davies Park.
For you Gold Coast people:
Saturday: Shiraz and Jazz. Over 50 wines to try, along Ferry Road, Southport.
6.30pm: Laneway, a country folk duo, are launching their new album via free instore performance at Jet Black Cat Music, 72a Vulture St, West End. https://www.facebook.com/events/379112235475166/ Check out their music here.
(Suss out a blog I wrote a while ago for The Good Guide on how awesome this place is.)
6pm: Laneway, yes, the band right above, are also August’s residents at the Brisbane Powerhouse (Turbine Platform). They will play every Friday night in August for free.
7pm: Queensland Symphony Orchestra, performing the amazing Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring musical score. Concert Hall, QPAC.
The complete Lord of the Rings movie will be projected onto a stage-sized screen. Patrons will enjoy the full movie experience with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra playing the entire movie score.
Over 3 hours! I can’t wait! BOTH SHOWS HAVE SOLD OUT! http://www.qpac.com.au/event/QSO_Gala2_Lord_12.aspx
3.30pm: Live Spark program at Brisbane Powerhouse. Weekly program featuring free music to end your week as the sun sets. Always a good way to end the week. This week featuring two local singer-songwriters, Brad Butcher and Sean Sennett.
House of Cards: Official launch of their first collection ‘Summer Days(& Summer Nights) at The Outpost & Winn Lane, in association with ‘Winn Late’.
Thursday – Saturday:
Kylie Ryan Australia: End of season sale. 3 days only. Times in the link. Kylie Ryan Australia Boutique, Shop 7, 377 Cavendish Road, Coorparoo (Parking at rear of building, turn into Kanumbra Street).
A Frock Affair: This market happens only once every 2 months at Davies Park, within the South’s Leagues Club, West End. This is INSIDE the Leagues Club. Davies Park holds the West End Markets every Saturday so don’t get confused, IT IS THERE.
Some of the stallholders are girls who genuinely want to get rid of clothing so my tip is ask for a discount if you do plan on buying multiple items. You can get some very cheap items here. I.e. Bettina Liano jeans I scored for $10. Barely worn.
Getting there: Catch the CityGlider to Montague Rd/Donkin St. Or catch 199 to West End School. Both require walking. Whilst you’re there, check out the West End Markets. Pick up some hipster points as well as tasty treats and fresh produce.
SALE ALERT: Free shipping from sale site The Outnet for buys over $300, enter SSAUFREESHIP at checkout.
Swirling Monkeys, Brisbane-based online store, are having a massive sale! Items from just $15! Don’t believe me? Click here.
Over a few months, the State Library of Queensland, in South Bank, have been holding programs in different areas of science. Starting this month is Cosmology! Lots of fun activities. You can observe the stars, make a galaxy-themed piece of clothing, perform acts of God (create galaxies). Bookings required for most. Suss them out!
10am-4pm: Vintage Fair in the Whale Mall. Lots of stalls selling vintage goodies. Dress to impress! There’s prizes for the best dressed! There’ll also be live entertainment as well as a free floor talk about the latest exhibit at the Queensland Museum.
