Friday night events: August 24

There’s been a lot of excitement in the air today. A little more than usual. Yes, it’s Friday. It’s warranted. If you get through today, you can enjoy two fabulous days off work (for most of us).

If you’ve never gone to see orchestra music live, you’re missing out. From loud crashing, tumbling crescendos to the near-silent pianissimo that still screams volumes in your ear in a concert hall, the goosebumps and shivers down your spine make this a music experience that you often miss at regular gigs and concerts. Tonight you have the chance to watch a live simulcast of the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra for FREE in the Cultural Forecourt, South Bank. They’ll be playing live inside the concert hall and whilst you may not be able to live the whole experience this is about as close as you’ll get for free.

Last year, QPAC featured the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra on live simulcast. From experience, you get extra footage of talks with the conductor that paying punters don’t get. You get to see how much music means to these people to perform for us. Something that often isolates you from these musicians. Also, due to a few technical issues and the sheer popularity of these live simulcast events they’ve moved it to the Cultural Forecourt, rather than the cafe area adjoining QPAC. Smart move.

Afternoon entertainment from 5pm
Live coverage from 7:30pm
Performance 8pm

Be warned, it’s outdoors. Bring something warm. You’re welcome to bring food, but a special appearance by the fun-loving people of The Bun Mobile will be there providing delicious gourmet buns.

Jet Black Cat Music:

Mentioned in a blog post earlier this morning, you can check out Lewis Watson, a 19-year-old singer/songwriter do his thing from 6.30pm. Get in early as these usually get crowded very fast.

El Alamein are going on tour throughout August, with friends Stockades (Melbourne), to release their EP “New Patterns”. This is the actual EP release show, and complimentary jelly beans will be provided throughout the whole show. Come chuck a hang please. Canned fruit is for suckers.
