Recently I received a mysterious email from My City Life pertaining to a secret location dinner. Points for building the hype!
On the night, our group of media folk were whisked away by the family-run Brisbane Lights Tours group from our CBD pick up point (The Sebel Brisbane). Told nothing of our destination, our only hint was that it would provide a good view of Brisbane. On the bus ride, we nibbled on a prawn rice paper roll as a light appetiser as we hypothesised over the location. We were led through a convoluted route through the streets of Ashgrove and eventually, we found our way up to The Summit Restaurant at Brisbane lookout, Mt Coot-tha! Continue reading
Papa Jack’s has found a new Papa (head chef)

Keeping with their Creole-inspired roots in the deep south, new Head Chef Nathan Wood brings a revamped food and drinks menu. I was recently invited along for a media menu launch to try some of their best dishes. Some are new cuts of meat (pork short ribs which are meatier and easier to handle) while others are just popular combinations (chicken and waffles with maple syrup, yo!). It may seem they’re moving away from French influences (no more crab souffle) but that doesn’t mean their menu lacks refinement.

My top 3 things to check out:
- Night Noodle Markets. Last year’s inaugural event (blogged here) was a hit. Loved it. Aiming to go multiple times over the 12 nights that it’s running from July 22 – August 2.
- Bar Hop. Yet again, Tanqueray gin is a sponsor. This year offering a gin-based cocktail and a bar snack for a cool $20 at various locations. I wonder how many of these I can do..
- Good Dinners Under $30. Budget-friendly two-course dinners. Say no more.

I have a soft spot for the Red Robin Supper Truck. Not just because I helped sponsor it’s creation along with 181 other supporters.
It’s an amalgamation of the creative minds of Rory Doyle (ex-Pawpaw Cafe and founder of the ridiculously popular Red Robin Supper Club pop-up dinners) and Patience Hodgson and John Patterson (of The Grates/musicians/Southside Tea Room owners/husband and wife). You know it’s in good hands.
After sponsoring their Pozible campaign, I decided to reap the benefits of my donation in their second week of opening. Sweet, delicious benefits.
Roti Place is a new Malaysian restaurant in the Brisbane CBD. I was tipped off about their existence and their grand opening by a fellow food blogger. And boy was I excited! It even made my parents excited enough to come into the city, which they never do!
It’s a month later after quietly opening that they have their “grand opening”. A nice change from venues which push themselves to the limit before they get their service and kitchen sorted out.
The restaurant is in the same building as Jackpot Dining which I think will prove to be a huge competitor since they also offer takeaway options for CBD workers. Plus, it’s new and shiny. There are plenty of seating options inside and outside as well as booths for larger groups.
We are seated almost immediately – much to our surprise considering free food is on offer! To my devastation, as we are about to order, the waitress informs us that there is no more beef rendang or curry chicken. This meant there would be no roti canai this time around. The risk of attending a grand opening with the offer of free food 1.5 hours after opening! Well played, I’ll have to return.

Bucci is one of my favourite James St restaurants. I’ve not eaten at any other place in James St as many times as Bucci (at least 4 or 5 times!). In fact, that’s probably how many of their past diners have felt too and which is why three years on, they’re celebrating their 3rd birthday.
In light of Bucci turning 3, they decided to throw a huge party with the help of some 300 invited guests and Lucid Media for organising the event. Bucci went all out to ensure a night of good food, good company and good drinks! Continue reading
